Postherpetic Neuralgia of the Face - A Young Mother's Story

Here is yet another patient who overcame Postherpetic Neuralgia of the face thanks to Dr. Aguila. Amanda was in pain for more than a year and was struggling to keep up with her young kids. But a procedure done in the office under local anesthesia eliminated her pain. Watch her story.

“I am Amanda, and I am from Kimball, Nebraska.

Dr. Aguila: “Amanda came to see us with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) of the face. That is chronic pain after shingles just on one side of her face.

In her case she had PHN that involves the supratrochlear nerve and the supraorbital nerve, and it was causing symptoms in her eyebrow and her forehead and all the way up her scalp and hair.

We’ve seen lots of patients like her. As a matter fact in the last 12 months, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of patients who have been coming to us with these kinds of problems.

For Amanda, the pain affected all aspects of her life.

“It hurt my relationship with my children and my husband. I went to try to see many different doctors and they would see me, and they would either tell me that they couldn’t help me or just give me another pill and push me out the door.”

Then she found Dr. Aguila, and everything changed.

Dr. Aguila: “She came to see us and I said I’m pretty sure I know what’s going on and I think I’ve got a good idea how we can help you with that.

So, we did some nerve blocks that turned off those nerves temporarily. She started to cry because her pain was gone.

Feeling confident after that diagnosis we decided to move forward with permanent relief. We were able to perform the procedure in the office under local anesthesia while she was wide awake. I was talking to her throughout the process making sure she was comfortable.

We surgically removed the affected nerves.

Amanda. “It was very calm, and I had no pain.”

Here she is a day after surgery. “I woke up the next morning and I honestly felt good. I can go outside. I can do all sorts of things.

My message to people is don’t give up and keep fighting and come see Dr. Aguila.”

Amanda will be back soon for another surgery to further relieve her pain.
